Chamba:

Thousands of devotees took a holy dip for ‘Chhota Snan’ (first ceremonial bath) in the glacial waters of Manimahesh Dal Lake as the Manimahesh Yatra commenced in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh on the occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami in the wee hours of Saturday (August 16, 2025). The Manimahesh Dal Lake faces the majestic Kailash Peak, believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva.

With chants of “Bam Bam Bhole” echoing through the Pir Panjal ranges, the pilgrimage officially kicked off and will continue till Radha Ashtami. Over the next two weeks, lakhs of pilgrims from across the country are expected to undertake the challenging journey.

Trek to 13,500 feet: Test of faith and endurance

The journey to Manimahesh begins from Bharmour, located about 80 km from Chamba town. From there, devotees head to Hadsar, the base point of the yatra. The remaining 13-km trek, leading to the lake at an altitude of 13,500 feet, is a mix of devotion and determination. The scenic yet rugged trail tests the physical stamina of pilgrims, but their spirits remain high with faith.

Devotees believe that a dip in the icy waters of the lake, combined with a glimpse of the cloud-covered Manimahesh Kailash peak, cleanses the soul and fulfils long-cherished wishes. Many consider it a Himalayan alternative to the more arduous Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet.

Security, medical support and helitaxi services in place

Chamba Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal said the yatra will run till August 31. Due to the ongoing monsoon and instances of falling rocks and landslides along the Chamba-Bharmour highway, he urged pilgrims to keep a close watch on weather updates before starting their journey.

To ensure safety and convenience, 700 personnel from police, Home Guards, NDRF and SDRF have been deployed across 13 sectors along the route. In addition, arrangements for temporary shelters, medical camps and community kitchens (langars) have been made to support the large influx of visitors.

Helitaxi services are operating from both Bharmour and Holi, offering round-trip rides up to Gaurikund for Rs 6,500. From Gaurikund, pilgrims continue the final leg of the journey on foot.

Every year, 6-7 lakh devotees undertake the Manimahesh Yatra, which stands out not just for its religious significance but also for the breathtaking natural beauty of its glacial lake and the towering presence of the Manimahesh Kailash.
