In a heartfelt tribute to their exemplary bravery and humanitarian efforts, Kangra Member of Parliament Dr Rajeev Bhardwaj presented a commendation certificate to the 16th Garhwal Rifles battalion for their swift and selfless action during the recent natural disaster in the Sulah constituency of Kangra district.

The soldiers, described as “devdoots” (guardian angels) by locals, were recognised for their rapid response following a massive landslide that struck Bachhwai panchayat on September 17-18, damaging at least 14 homes and putting several lives at risk.

As villagers were trapped in debris and faced an acute crisis, troops from the 16th Garhwal Rifles arrived promptly at the scene. The soldiers rescued residents, administered first aid and arranged food, water and essential supplies. They also retrieved valuables and household items from damaged homes and returned them safely to the affected families.

Speaking at the event, MP Dr. Bhardwaj commended the battalion’s unflinching courage and compassion, stating,
“The soldiers of the 16th Garhwal Rifles not only saved lives but uplifted the spirits of an entire community. Their actions are a shining example of the Indian Army’s motto — ‘Seva Parmo Dharma’ (Service is the highest duty).”

Leadership, unity, recognition

During the formal ceremony, Colonel Arpit Pareek, the commanding officer of the battalion, received the commendation letter on behalf of his unit. The honour was jointly presented by MP Dr Rajeev Bhardwaj and former Assembly Speaker and senior BJP leader Vipin Singh Parmar.

Also in attendance were Major General Chandel, Colonel Pareek and other senior military and civil officials. The presence of top leaders from both political and defense backgrounds added solemnity to the occasion.

Wider relief efforts across Sulah

Former Speaker Vipin Singh Parmar, who represents the Sulah Assembly constituency, also praised the Army’s dedication.

“The 16th Garhwal Rifles not only responded heroically in Bachhwai but also carried out relief and rescue operations in several other affected villages across my constituency. Their courage, discipline, and service spirit are an inspiration to us all,” he noted.

The incident and its aftermath have highlighted the crucial role played by the armed forces in disaster relief beyond their battlefield duties. The local administration and residents alike have expressed deep gratitude for the timely and compassionate intervention by the Army.
