The BJP’s Run for Unity event in Dharamshala on Sunday may have been held in the name of national integration, but it ended up sending out strong political signals within the party’s Himachal Pradesh unit.
Sharing the stage were former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, former minister Sudhir Sharma, and Deputy Speaker Pawan Kajal — a trio that reflected the shifting power equations in Kangra district’s BJP landscape.

While Sudhir Sharma spoke for around five minutes, focusing on organisational strength and unity, Pawan Kajal’s ten-minute-long address was clearly aimed at re-energising his supporters. When Jairam Thakur took the mic, his tone and words left little doubt — he praised both leaders as “pillars of the party” and called for strengthening BJP at the grassroots under their leadership.

Political observers believe Thakur’s visit marked a clear shift in Dharamshala’s BJP politics. “The signal is unmistakable — the party is backing Sudhir Sharma’s organisational rise while keeping Pawan Kajal firmly in the local power circle,” said a senior analyst.

Though officially about unity, the Run for Unity became a stage for rebalancing BJP’s internal dynamics — where Thakur’s presence bolstered Sharma’s stature and Kajal’s energetic address showcased his grassroots hold.
In Dharamshala, the race for unity might be over — but the race for political relevance has just begun.
