IPS Bhagat Singh Thakur Honored with DGP Disc for the Fourth Time

Mandi: IPS officer Bhagat Singh Thakur has once again been recognized for his exceptional contribution to law enforcement, receiving the prestigious DGP Disc for the fourth time. Currently serving in Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s home district of Hamirpur, Thakur has previously been honored with this award in 2009, 2018, and 2022. This marks his second consecutive year being acknowledged for his outstanding service, with the 2023 recognition coming for his leadership as Commandant of the Third Battalion, Pandoh.

In total, 152 police officers and personnel from across the state have been selected for this award, including two of Thakur’s colleagues from the Third Battalion, DSP Amar Singh and Sub-Inspector Vidhi Chand.

Consistent Dedication to Public Service

Bhagat Singh Thakur is no stranger to accolades, having previously received the President’s Police Medal in 2020 for his distinguished service in the police force. With 31 years of dedicated service, Thakur has made a name for himself as a committed and effective leader. His exceptional work ethic and leadership skills have consistently been recognized, and the DGP Disc honors his contributions once again.

Reforming the Third Battalion, Pandoh

From September 29, 2022, to June 10, 2024, Bhagat Singh Thakur served as the Commandant of the Third Battalion, Pandoh. During his tenure, he made significant improvements to the infrastructure and promoted the welfare of his officers. Under his leadership, numerous sports and community events were organized, helping to reduce stress among the police force and creating a positive and motivating environment for the personnel.

Thakur also played a pivotal role in the 2023 natural disaster relief efforts, not only helping affected individuals directly but also opening the doors of the battalion for those in need. His hands-on approach and humanitarian efforts during the disaster have left a lasting impression on the local community, who still hold him in high regard.

 

A Storied Career in Policing

Hailing from the Shimla district, Bhagat Singh Thakur began his police career in 1994 as an Inspector. His early assignments included serving as SHO in Solan and Paonta Sahib. In 2000, he was promoted to the rank of DSP, serving in Paonta Sahib, Rajgarh, and Parwanoo. Thakur also served as Chief Security Officer at Himachal Pradesh University before moving on to more senior positions.

Over the years, Thakur has held a variety of important roles, including ASP in Bilaspur, Sirmaur, and Solan districts, SP in Kinnaur, SP of State CID in Shimla, AIG of Railways and Traffic Police, SP of Estate and Welfare, and SP of Law and Order. He also served as the Commandant of Jungha before taking command of the Third Battalion, Pandoh.

In his current role as SP Hamirpur, Thakur continues to serve with distinction. Beyond his policing career, he is also known for his prowess as a national-level boxer, having won a national gold medal during his athletic career.

Bhagat Singh Thakur’s fourth DGP Disc award underscores his enduring commitment to public service and his effectiveness as a leader in the Himachal Pradesh Police. His ability to inspire, innovate, and respond to crises has set a benchmark for others in the force to follow.
