Mandi: To combat drug trafficking, the Seraj unit of the Youth Congress in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh has launched an initiative offering a cash reward for reporting ‘chitta’ peddlers.
If anyone from the Seraj region spots people involved in selling or consuming the synthetic drug, they can inform the police and receive a prize of Rs 15,000 in return. Interestingly, Seraj is the home constituency of former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, a senior BJP leader who is currently the Leader of the Opposition in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly.
Tarun Thakur, a young leader from Seraj and vice-president of the Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress, emphasised that the identity of informants would be kept confidential by both the police and the Youth Congress.
“Chitta has spread its dark network across villages, ensnaring the youth in its grip. Often, people choose to ignore such activities, but now, with the incentive of a cash reward, they may come forward to report drug-related crimes,” he said.
Thakur said the aim was to curb chitta menace and save young lives. Expressing concern over growing drug abuse, he said several families had lost their children to this lethal addiction.
“Hearing their tragic stories is heartbreaking,” he said, calling upon the public to support this campaign and assured that the initiative would be expanded to other constituencies in the district through the Youth Congress.
