Shimla: Himachal Pradesh has turned into a tourist hotspot this holiday season, with thousands of visitors thronging its famous destinations to celebrate Christmas and welcome the New Year.
After a prolonged lull, the state’s tourism industry has witnessed a massive revival, generating business worth crores of rupees. Heavy snowfall in the region has further boosted tourist inflow, with hotels already reporting full occupancy through January 4 due to advance bookings.
Tourist surge across major destinations
Popular destinations like Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Khajjiar, Kasauli, Chail, Kufri and Narkanda were buzzing with activity as tourists reveled in the festivities.
Shimla, Kasauli and Chail reported an impressive 90-100% hotel occupancy during Christmas, while Manali and Dharamshala recorded around 80% occupancy.
On Christmas alone, over 4,000 tourist vehicles entered Manali, and more than 3,000 vehicles made their way to Shimla.
Festive celebrations in full swing
In Shimla, the Winter Carnival added to the festive cheer, with tourists enjoying cultural performances, local cuisine, and traditional Himachali dances.
By noon, the Ridge and Mall Road were packed with visitors. With parking lots full, the influx of vehicles led to traffic jams on Cart Road, the city’s primary artery.
The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) organised grand Christmas parties at its hotels, including Holiday Home and Peterhoff, while private hotels hosted their own celebrations. Tourists danced the night away to DJ beats and traditional Himachali Nati songs.
Train services from Kalka to Shimla ran at full capacity and Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) Volvo buses from Delhi to Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala were also packed. To meet the rising demand, the HRTC has introduced additional Volvo buses on these routes.
Positive outlook from hoteliers
Anil Chandel, owner of Hotel Rocky Knob in Shimla, expressed optimism about the season: “The snowfall and festive vibe have drawn tourists in large numbers. It’s heartwarming to see the hospitality industry thriving again. This is a welcome boost for everyone in the sector.”
