SHIMLA: The Animal Husbandry Department of Himachal Pradesh has decided to insure over 38,000 sheep and goats in the state. The sum to be paid to get the sheep and goats insured has been fixed at Rs 912 per head whereas the insurer will get Rs 8,000 in case of any eventuality.
However, Below Poverty Line (BPL), Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) cattle herders will have to deposit Rs 173 for the insurance whereas the amount will be Rs 365 for Above Poverty Line (APL) herders. The remaining amount will be deposited by the department. The last date for the process is March 31.
The Animal Husbandry Department is aiming to insure 38,300 pet sheep and goats across the state. Of these, 21,050 are owned by people belonging to the BPL, SC and ST community and the rest 17,250 to APL farmers. These APL farmers will have to deposit Rs 365 while the department will pay the remaining Rs 547.
The Animal Husbandry Department will insure only those sheep and goats that are above five months of age. This insurance will be for three years.
If the cattle herder’s sheep and goats die due to any disease, he will get an insurance amount of Rs 8,000 per head. However, the insurance amount could be altered depending on the age and condition of the animal.
The state government has entrusted the responsibility of insurance to HIBL company. The Animal Husbandry Department has given different targets for all districts. The target has been set to provide maximum insurance in Kangra and Chamba districts. In Hamirpur also, a target has been given for insurance of 1,000 sheep and goats. Farmers can get it done in nearest veterinary dispensaries before March 31 so that they can get the compensation amount on time.
