In a major verdict, the court of Additional Sessions Judge (Special Judge) Jaswant Singh in Dharamshala has sentenced Jaswinder Singh alias Sedu, son of Veer Singh, resident of Ward No. 05, Lambi Gali, Nurpur, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 21(B) of the NDPS Act. The court also imposed a fine of ₹1,00,000. In case of non-payment of the fine, the convict will undergo an additional one year of imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, on December 28, 2020, a police team from Nurpur was on patrol near the park at Lambi Gali when they noticed a man attempting to flee upon seeing the police. On being apprehended and searched, 6.28 grams of heroin (chitta) was recovered from his possession. The seized substance was sealed as per procedure under the NDPS Act, and the accused was arrested and subjected to medical examination. The case property was deposited in the police malkhana.
The forensic laboratory report confirmed the substance to be diacetylmorphine (heroin). During investigation, all provisions under Sections 52-A, 55, and 57 of the NDPS Act were duly complied with.
District Public Prosecutor Sanjeev Rana effectively argued the case, presenting the statements of 12 witnesses, including police officials, independent witnesses, and scientific experts. After reviewing the evidence and documents, the court found the accused guilty and pronounced the sentence.
