Himachal shopkeeper in Chamba caught selling ‘chitta’ under guise of grocery business

Police seize 28 grams of heroin, over Rs 2 lakh in cash during raid

CHAMBA: In a major breakthrough in the fight against narcotics, the police in Chamba in Himachal Pradesh have arrested a shopkeeper who was allegedly selling chitta (a form of heroin) under the cover of running a small grocery store.

The arrest was made during a surprise raid at Bharyian village near the Chamba district headquarters. The accused, identified as Arvind Kumar, was caught with 27.94 grams of chitta and Rs 2.29 lakh in cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales.

The operation was conducted based on a tip-off received by the police while patrolling the Chamba-Jot-Chowari road.

Tip-off leads to surprise raid

According to officials, the raid was part of an ongoing anti-narcotics campaign in the region. Acting swiftly on confidential information, a police team raided the grocery shop in Bharyian village.
Upon searching the premises, they recovered the contraband and the large amount of cash, confirming suspicions of illicit activity.

A senior Chamba police official said a case had been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Financial trail to be investigated

The authorities revealed that the significant amount of cash seized suggested a deeper network of drug distribution.
The Chamba SSP has directed officials to probe the financial background of the accused, including an investigation into his bank accounts and transaction history.
“This is not just about one shopkeeper. We are trying to uncover the full extent of the network involved,” said an official source.

Police urge public to remain vigilant

A senior police official emphasised the importance of community support in tackling the drug menace, urging residents to cooperate with police by reporting suspicious activities and participating in awareness campaigns.
“The public plays a key role in our efforts. We appeal to everyone in the district to come forward with information and help spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse,” she said.
