Under the leadership of Block Medical Officer Dr. Anita Sharma, the Health Department’s COTPA Flying Squad conducted a special inspection drive on Tuesday in Bandahu, Tikar, and Ganderah market areas.
The team inspected shops, public places and crowded areas to check compliance with the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). During the inspection, several violations were found, and the squad issued 11 challans on the spot.
Strict action was taken against:
- Open sale of tobacco products
- Violation of smoking prohibition rules at designated places
- Absence of mandatory warning boards in shops
Officials also spread awareness among shopkeepers and locals, emphasizing that the purpose of COTPA is to safeguard public health, and adherence to the law is mandatory for everyone.
The inspection team included Dr. Anita Sharma, Sushil Dhiman, Jeevan Lal, and Anil Kumar from the Police Department, who ensured enforcement against violators. Authorities confirmed that such inspections will continue regularly to strengthen tobacco control laws and raise public awareness about health.
The campaign served as a warning to local residents that violations will invite strict penalties. The Health Department reiterated that compliance with the Act is a collective responsibility to protect public interest and maintain a clean environment.
