MANDI: A tragic incident unfolded in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh where a Class XI girl, Navya Sharma, ended her life by jumping off Victoria Bridge.
A resident of Devdhar village in Chachyot Valley of Seraj sub-division in Mandi district, the girl, known for her academic excellence, was staying in a rented room in Mandi to pursue her studies, while her mother and brother lived in their native village. She was in the middle of her examinations when the shocking event took place.
Father had taken away girl’s mobile phone
According to police sources, Navya had a conversation with her father the night before the incident regarding her mobile phone.
He had taken it away, assuring her that he would wake her up early to prepare for her exam. She went to bed without her phone, but by morning, she was nowhere to be found.
Initially, her father assumed she was busy studying, but when she remained unresponsive for a long time, he began searching for her. Unfortunately, his worst fears came true.

CCTV footage leads to immediate search operation
CCTV footage from the Victoria Bridge area captured Navya walking alone early in the morning. Moments later, she disappeared from the frame.
Suspecting the worst, the police launched a search operation and called in the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for assistance.
After two hours of extensive searching, the NDRF team recovered her body nearly 1 km away from the bridge. The authorities retrieved her remains and sent them for post-mortem examination.
No suicide note found, investigation underway
The police investigation has not revealed any suicide note, but the authorities believe the tragic incident was triggered by a family dispute and potential mental stress. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.
The incident has left not only Navya’s family but entire Mandi in shock. The police have registered a case for further investigation.
