Health Experts Speak on Mandi’s Tragedy: Handle Mental Pressure During Exams

Mandi: Health experts have expressed concerns over the mounting mental pressure students face during exams. As board exams approach, students often find themselves overwhelmed—grappling with performance anxiety, parental expectations, and competition.

Unfortunately, this stress is not limited to students alone. Parents, often unknowingly, contribute to it by placing excessive emphasis on results rather than well-being.

On Monday, Mandi witnessed a tragic incident that has shaken the community. A 16-year-old girl ended her life by jumping off a bridge after her father took away her mobile phone.

This heartbreaking event raises a pressing question: Are we addressing students’ mental health adequately, or are we pushing them toward silent suffering?

Child psychologist Ranjana Sharma highlights that students today are not only dealing with academic pressure but also struggling with social validation.

“Social media has made them more vulnerable to comparisons and unrealistic expectations. When parents abruptly take away mobile phones, children often feel disconnected from their primary source of comfort,” she explains.

Parents, often with good intentions, unknowingly add to their child’s stress. Instead of offering support, many enforce strict discipline, focusing solely on results.

However, Sharma emphasizes that parents should engage in open discussions with their children, introduce digital restrictions gradually, and assure them that exams are not the ultimate measure of success.

Health experts suggest that students should structure their study schedules wisely, focusing on one subject at a time rather than cramming. A well-organized study plan helps reduce anxiety and improves retention.

Incorporating physical activity and mindfulness techniques like meditation, yoga, and simple breathing exercises can significantly alleviate stress. Additionally, taking short breaks between study sessions prevents mental exhaustion and enhances focus.

Proper sleep is equally crucial. Many students sacrifice sleep in an attempt to study longer, but a well-rested mind retains information better and copes with stress more effectively.

Parents must create a supportive environment by prioritizing their child’s emotional well-being over grades. Encouraging open conversations and being a pillar of support can help prevent extreme steps fueled by stress and helplessness.
