Congress state spokesperson Puneet Malli has termed the BJP’s “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy” march a mere political show, questioning the party’s silence on concerns related to voters’ rights and electoral accountability.

In a statement issued on Friday, Malli said that while the BJP is raising slogans about protecting democracy, it must first clarify who will guarantee the protection of citizens’ voting rights, which form the foundation of a democratic system. He asserted that democracy is strengthened not through rallies and slogans alone, but through free and fair elections, independent institutions, transparent procedures, and the protection of every eligible citizen’s right to vote.

Malli emphasized that the Congress party is not opposed to the purification of electoral rolls or the removal of fraudulent voter entries. However, he maintained that such exercises must be carried out with complete transparency, accountability, and adherence to established legal procedures. Raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, he said, should not be viewed as an act of anarchy but rather as a democratic responsibility to safeguard citizens’ rights.

Questions Raised for BJP

The Congress leader questioned who would be held accountable if the names of eligible voters were removed from electoral rolls. He also sought clarity on what concrete measures would be in place to assist vulnerable sections, including senior citizens, migrant workers, economically weaker citizens, and residents of remote areas, who may face difficulties in completing documentation or procedural requirements.

Focus on Public Issues

Malli further stated that BJP MPs, MLAs, and other leaders should answer pressing public concerns instead of relying solely on political slogans. He urged the ruling party to address issues such as inflation, unemployment, rural development challenges, and everyday problems faced by citizens.

According to Malli, questioning government policies and institutional processes is an essential role of the opposition in a democracy, while it remains the responsibility of governments and constitutional institutions to provide factual and transparent answers to public concerns.
