Bharmour BJP MLA Janak Raj has strongly criticised the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government for its alleged failure to make adequate arrangements for the ongoing Manimahesh Yatra, one of north India’s most revered and challenging pilgrimages.
Expressing his frustration, Janak Raj stated, “It’s a shame that the Himachal Pradesh government and the Chamba district administration are facing a serious problem like traffic jams during the most famous Manimahesh Yatra for 15 hours.
The government was well aware of the pilgrimage’s challenges, yet it failed to make appropriate arrangements to address this issue. Being a permanent resident of Bharmour, I understand the condition of the roads and the administration (and could have helped). The government must fulfill its responsibility.”

The Manimahesh Yatra officially commenced on Monday (August 26, 2024) on the auspicious occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami and will continue until Radhashtami. Nearly 1 lakh devotees have already arrived in Bharmour, with many having started the 13-km trek from Hadsar to the Dal Lake, situated at an altitude of 13,500 feet.
The Chota Shahi Snan (small royal bath) at Dal Lake began early this morning, with the auspicious time for bathing starting at 3.40 am and continuing until 2.20 pm. The 10-hour, 40-minute window for the holy bath saw a massive influx of devotees, leading to severe traffic jams on the narrow Chamba-Bharmour national highway.
The congestion has posed significant challenges for the local administration, which is struggling to manage the surge in vehicles. The road’s narrowness in several sections has further posed challenges, with traffic jams lasting for hours. The administration has been working hard to alleviate the situation, but the overwhelming number of pilgrims has made it difficult to maintain order.
The Manimahesh Yatra, known for its spiritual significance and challenging terrain, will continue until September 11, with the big Shahi Snan scheduled for Radhashtami on September 10-11.
