SHIMLA:

The Himachal Pradesh Police have dismissed a constable who was arrested in connection with a chitta (heroin) smuggling case, reinforcing its zero-tolerance policy against drug-related crimes even when department personnel are involved.

Constable Lalit Kanwar, a resident of Jabli in Kasauli, and serving in the Solan district police, was arrested on June 19, 2025, after his involvement in a drug smuggling case came to light during an investigation.

The case originated from a tip-off received by a police team from the Dharampur police station, under which 11.33 grams of chitta were seized from a man named Harish Sharma, a resident of Jadari, Kandaghat.

Internal probe confirms charges against accused constable

Following Harish Sharma’s arrest, the investigation revealed that another person, later identified as constable Lalit Kanwar, was also involved in the smuggling operation. Lalit was immediately taken into custody on June 19 and subsequently suspended from duty. A departmental inquiry was launched to probe his involvement further.

Solan Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh confirmed that the inquiry substantiated the allegations against Lalit Kanwar. “The charges were proven during the departmental investigation. His actions not only violated the law but also tarnished the reputation of the police department,” the SP stated.

Zero tolerance policy against internal collusion in drug trade

The Himachal Pradesh Police have reiterated their firm stance against any form of collusion between law enforcement personnel and drug traffickers. “The department maintains a zero-tolerance policy in such matters. No individual, regardless of their rank or position, will be spared if found complicit in illegal activities,” said SP Gaurav Singh.

As a result of the confirmed findings, Lalit Kanwar has been permanently dismissed from service. The case against him is ongoing in court, and legal proceedings will follow the due course of law.
