MANDI/SHIMLA: In a significant push to modernise public transportation in Himachal Pradesh, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has cleared the purchase of 700 new buses.
The decision was finalised during the HRTC Board of Directors meeting, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, at Hotel Holiday Home on Saturday.
Diverse fleet expansion to strengthen services
The approved procurement includes a combination of diesel, Volvo and electric buses aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of state-run transport. The fleet enhancement comprises:
• 250 diesel buses (37-seaters) for regular intercity and rural routes.
• 24 super luxury buses designed for long-distance, premium travel.
• 297 Type-1 electric buses to promote eco-friendly commuting, expected to hit the roads within the next four months.
• 100 mini buses (tempo travellers) for short routes and areas with lower passenger demand, for which fresh tenders will be issued.
• Additionally, 23 more Type-1 electric buses have been approved, underlining the state’s focus on sustainable transport solutions.
New bus terminals and operational enhancements
The board also sanctioned the construction of new bus terminals in Baddi and Bilaspur to improve passenger convenience and streamline operations. To strengthen on-road support, the HRTC will purchase four cranes and two quick response vehicles.
Deputy CM Agnihotri emphasised the importance of replacing outdated vehicles, citing the Central Government’s directive to phase out buses older than 15 years. “The arrival of new buses will significantly improve the HRTC’s operational capabilities,” he stated.
HRTC’s expansion journey: Looking back
Since its inception on October 2, 1974, following the merger of Himachal Government Transport with Mandi-Kullu Road Transport Corporation, the HRTC has continually expanded its network.
From 733 buses covering 379 routes in 1974, the fleet grew to 3,130 buses operating across 2,850 routes by December 2018.
In recent years, the corporation has made notable additions to its fleet. In 2023, HRTC planned to induct 25 new Volvo buses and 50 Tempo Travellers. Furthermore, the state allocated Rs 517 crore for electric bus procurement, emphasising a shift towards greener transport solutions.
The government has also ensured financial backing for HRTC, providing a monthly support of Rs 63 crore to maintain operational efficiency, particularly vital in a state with limited air and rail connectivity.
With this ambitious fleet expansion and infrastructure development, HRTC is set to offer improved, modern, and eco-conscious transport services across Himachal Pradesh.
