CHAMBA: Panic ensued in Chamba district on Monday afternoon as two tremors rattled the region, catching residents off guard during their daily activities.
The first earthquake struck at approximately 3.49 pm, creating an atmosphere of fear among the locals. Those situated on upper floors of offices and residences reported feeling the tremors most intensely.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the earthquake registered a magnitude of 3 to 4 on the Richter scale, with a duration lasting between 15 to 20 seconds. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage in Chamba district resulting from the seismic activity.
Chamba district, falling in zone 5 from an earthquake perspective, is considered highly susceptible to seismic events. The area experiences daily occurrences of minor tremors, adding to the heightened sensitivity of the region.
A subsequent earthquake was recorded at 4.02 pm, displaying a greater intensity than the initial shock but with a shorter duration. The seismic activity prompted residents to invoke the name of God as a reflexive response.
The epicentre of the earthquake was at Kargil in Ladakh, where its magnitude was estimated at 5.5. Authorities in Lahaul-Spiti swiftly issued a social media post, urging residents to exercise caution and take necessary precautions in the aftermath of the seismic events.
