Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla’s iconic but sinking Ridge, a no-vehicle zone, witnessed an alarming breach as two large trucks and a massive crane were spotted traversing the restricted area. A video capturing these vehicles on the Ridge has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage and raising serious safety concerns.
The Ridge, where even bicycles aren’t allowed and is accessible only to emergency services like ambulances, fire trucks and water tankers and also the convoys of the Governor and the Chief Minister, now faces scrutiny over this violation.
Ex-Deputy Mayor Tikender Panwar lodges complaint
Former Shimla Deputy Mayor Tikender Panwar has lodged a formal complaint with SP Sanjeev Gandhi, questioning how these vehicles were allowed entry.
Panwar also expressed concerns, stating, “A crane was seen lifting large iron pillars on the Ridge, endangering its structural stability. Additionally, two trucks were spotted near the Christ church in the evening. This calls for an immediate investigation.”
Police say not aware who gave the permission
Shockingly, the Shimla police appeared unaware of the incident. Shimla ASP Navdeep Singh said, “The trucks were reportedly carrying materials for the upcoming Saras Fair. We are investigating who authorised their entry onto the Ridge.”
The Ridge rests atop a British-era water reservoir, which still supplies water to Shimla. Movement of heavy vehicles poses a significant threat to this aging structure, potentially endangering the city’s water supply. The incident has reignited concerns over the fragile state of the Ridge and its ability to withstand such violations.
