A private Volvo bus carrying New Year revellers met with an accident on the Kalka-Shimla National Highway-5 near Jawali in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh early on Monday (December 30, 2024) morning.
More than 10 persons were injured in the accident, which occurred around 7 am when the bus, on its way from Chandigarh to Shimla, collided with a roadside divider and overturned.
The bus was carrying around 35 passengers at the time of the accident. Eyewitnesses stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed, leading to the collision. The impact caused the bus to overturn on the highway.
Passengers were rescued by breaking the windows of the bus, and injured individuals were rushed to the Parwanoo hospital for treatment.
This particular stretch of NH-5 has witnessed several accidents in the past, raising concerns about safety measures. Despite repeated incidents, neither the authorities concerned nor the National Highways Authority of India seems to be taking adequate steps to curb the rising number of accidents.
When contacted, the investigating officer (IO) at the site stated that the exact cause of the accident was being ascertained and that the list of injured passengers was yet to be released.
