Lahaul
With sustained efforts and scientific guidance from the CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR–IHBT), Palampur, large-scale blooming of tulip flowers is being witnessed across the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh.
Colourful tulips are presently in full bloom in the fields of progressive farmers in Udaipur, Lahaul, marking a major success in floriculture and tulip bulb production. Over the past three years, CSIR–IHBT has been working closely with local farmers, providing scientific support, high-quality planting material, and technical guidance to promote tulip bulb cultivation. The initiative aims to establish Lahaul as a hub for tulip bulb production.
The institute is also collaborating with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to expand tulip bulb production in the national capital region, ensuring the availability of high-quality bulbs for ornamental use.
According to Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director, CSIR–IHBT, the favourable climate of Lahaul and the dedicated efforts of farmers have created immense potential for tulip bulb production. He added that the technical model developed by the institute is giving the region a new identity in scientific floriculture.
This initiative is emerging as a significant milestone in Himalayan floriculture, and efforts are underway to expand the model further to benefit more farmers and regions in the future.
