Palampur : A one-day training camp was organized today at the District Project Management Unit, Palampur under the JICA-supported Himachal Pradesh Crop Diversification Promotion Project (Phase-II). The program saw the participation of 26 farmers from 8 sub-projects of Kangra district, aiming to enhance their understanding of Farmer Development Associations (KVAs) and their future management responsibilities.
Empowering Farmers for Sustainable Agriculture
The training focused on preparing farmers to independently manage, maintain, and financially sustain various project activities after its completion. Experts emphasized the importance of KVAs in ensuring the continuity and success of crop diversification initiatives.

Dr. Rajnish Sharma, subject expert, outlined key project activities and introduced concepts like SHEP (Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment Promotion), PMVRP (Production Management and Market Access Program), and JICA vegetable gardens, all designed to increase farmers’ income and promote natural farming.
Financial and Operational Sustainability
Dr. Prem Lal Sharma, retired district project manager, explained the roles and responsibilities of management committee members, stressing that all project resources will be transferred to farmers post-completion. He advised farmers to collect regular monthly contributions to ensure smooth financial operations and maintenance.

Dr. Purushottam Lal Sharma, PMC expert, shared his experiences, encouraging farmers to adopt modern agricultural techniques to boost productivity and strengthen vegetable production.
Project’s Impact on Livelihoods
District Project Manager Dr. Yoginder Pal highlighted the project’s role in improving farmers’ livelihoods, emphasizing that KVAs will be crucial for long-term success.
The training concluded with enthusiastic participation and idea exchange, reinforcing farmers’ commitment to sustainable agriculture and crop diversification in Himachal Pradesh.
