Under the leadership of Principal Dr. Anil Kumar Thakur, the Department of Economics at Government Arya Degree College, Nurpur successfully organised a one-day national seminar titled “Statistical Strengthening: Importance and Practical Relevance of Statistics.” The seminar witnessed active participation from 90 students, who received training in data infrastructure.
The event was sponsored by the Department of Economics and Statistics, Government of Himachal Pradesh, and held under the Strategic Statistical Plan (SSS) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI), Government of India.
The interdisciplinary significance of the seminar was highlighted by the presence of Prof. Kiran Bala, Head of the Commerce Department, and Prof. Pearl Bakhshi from the Economics Department. Prof. Bakhshi emphasized the crucial link between economic theory and data-driven policymaking.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Amit Srivastava, Professor and Head of Department at Jaypee Business School, Waknaghat. With over 25 years of experience and more than 30 research publications, Dr. Srivastava delivered an insightful lecture on statistical infrastructure. He explained how robust data systems form the foundation of economic development, international finance, and national planning.
Throughout the technical sessions, the 90 participants engaged deeply, learning how classroom knowledge of statistics can be applied to bridge gaps in global business practices. The seminar concluded with a call for students to embrace data literacy as a core competency for their future careers.
