Dharamshala:
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday said that the professor purportedly named in a video statement by a Government College-Dharamshala student, who later died, will be suspended with immediate effect. The Chief Minister was speaking to reporters during an informal interaction at Kandaghat in Solan district.

CM Sukhu said the matter was being taken seriously and directions had been issued for a detailed probe. “Anyone found involved in the case will face the strictest possible action. The government will not show any leniency,” he asserted.

The incident has also drawn the attention of the University Grants Commission (UGC), which has constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. A senior official said the UGC had taken suo motu cognisance of the case and asked the committee to submit its report at the earliest.

Calling the incident “deeply distressing”, the UGC said the safety of students was paramount and any lapse in this regard would not be tolerated. It assured the bereaved family that all those found guilty would be punished.

Meanwhile, allegations that the student was harassed using caste-based slurs had prompted the Himachal Pradesh Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission to seek a report from the police. The State Women’s Commission has also taken cognisance of the case, with its chairperson Vidya Negi asking the Kangra SP to submit a detailed report.
