CHANDIGARH:
In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through Punjab, Sanjay Verma, co-owner of the internationally renowned tailoring brand New Wear Well, was shot dead in broad daylight outside his iconic showroom in Abohar on Monday (July 7, 2025).

The tailor shop, revered across India and overseas for its premium bespoke suits, was originally established in 1885, making it one of the oldest continuously operating tailoring establishments in the country.

Three armed assailants on motorcycle commit crime

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, Verma had just arrived at his store and stepped out of his car when three armed assailants on a motorcycle approached and opened fire without warning. Multiple gunshots rang out, creating chaos in the busy commercial area as nearby shopkeepers and pedestrians fled for cover.

As the attackers attempted to flee, they reportedly lost control of their motorcycle, fell to the ground and then snatched another bike from a passerby to escape. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Verma was declared dead on arrival by medical staff.

Senior police officials reached the crime scene shortly after the incident. Investigations are currently underway, with teams scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity to trace the culprits. No arrests have been made so far, and the motive for the killing remains unclear, though authorities have promised swift action.

Shop boasts of clientele comprising judicial officers, cops, civil servants

The murder of Sanjay Verma has deeply unsettled the local community and the broader business circle, especially given the reputation of New Wear Well. The showroom is not only famous across north India, but also boasts a clientele that includes judicial officers, police officials and civil servants, with loyal customers from across the globe.

The showroom’s website reflects its rich heritage: “We have been doing the same thing since 1885 — tailoring suits. It’s a legacy passed down through generations, driven by perfection and passion.”

The gruesome killing comes at a time when violent crime in Punjab has been steadily rising, raising serious concerns about law and order in the state. Business owners and residents alike are now demanding stricter policing and swift justice in the wake of this brazen attack.
