MANDI: Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee chief spokesperson Prem Kaushal has accused the BJP of insulting its “Kargil hero” Brig Khushal Thakur (retd) by giving the Mandi parliamentary seat ticket to Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut.
Addressing the media in Mandi, the chief spokesperson launched a scathing attack not only against BJP’s Mandi candidate Kangana Ranaut, but also targeted Prime Minister Modi and the entire BJP apparatus.
Kaushal asserted that there was little contest on the Mandi seat, with the “electoral tide firmly favouring Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh”. He pointed out that while Kangana may be a celebrated actress, her foray into politics didn’t measure up against the seasoned political acumen of Congress leader Vikramaditya.
Highlighting Vikramaditya’s two-term MLA status and political tutelage under his father and former six-term Chief Minister late Virbhadra Singh, Kaushal contrasted it with the BJP’s decision to field an actress with no prior political experience.
Accusing the BJP of sacrificing its former candidate and Kargil hero Khushal Thakur to favour Kangana, Kaushal countered the party’s “current political ethos as merely focused on retaining power”. He contended that BJP’s ideology had “eroded to the point where it welcomes anyone into its fold, transforming the party into a sanctuary for corruption”.
Further criticising the BJP for its divisive rhetoric, Kaushal warned of a future where grassroots BJP workers might demand reserved slots within the party and government. Alongside, he vehemently denounced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “polarising speeches”. The press conference, attended by other prominent leaders, including councillor Alkananda Handa, Rajendra Mohan and Champa Thakur, underscored the intense political battle brewing in Himachal Pradesh as the elections draw nearer.
