The Election Commission on Monday reprimanded Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate for making “derogatory remarks” against actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut, who is the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.
In response to Shrinate’s reply to the notice issued for violating the model code of conduct, the election body concluded that her comments constituted a personal attack and contravened the provisions of the model code of conduct.
In its order, the EC warned Shrinate to exercise caution in her public statements during the model code of conduct period. Additionally, her election-related communications will be subject to special monitoring by the Election Commission henceforth.
A copy of the warning notice has also been forwarded to the Congress chief to sensitise other party members about the importance of refraining from derogatory comments and adhering to MCC guidelines in public communications.
Emphasising the significance of maintaining the dignity of women during elections, the commission reiterated its commitment to upholding their status and preventing any erosion thereof during the electoral process under its purview.
The show-cause notice to Shrinate was issued on March 27 following a complaint from the BJP. She faced criticism for the derogatory social media post targeting the actress, which included a semi-nude image with a caption in Hindi questioning the rates in Mandi. The post has since been removed.
