Tight security measures ahead of elections lead to huge seizure of heroin, cannabis in Himachal’s Mandi; 3 smugglers arrested

MANDI: The tight security measures ahead of the Lok Sabha elections and bypolls to six Assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh have led to significant seizures of contraband and other intoxicants.
In Mandi district, the police have registered three cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after drug seizures.
During a routine check, the police apprehended Ram Putra of Sharan village in Sanj tehsil of Kullu district after recovering 1.81 kg of cannabis from his possession. The accused has been charged under the NDPS Act and is currently in police custody for further interrogation.
2 from Amritsar caught with heroin
Acting on intelligence inputs, a team of the Mandi Sadar police station intercepted two persons belonging to Amritsar in Punjab after recovering 21.87 grams of heroin from them. The accused, Pradeep Kapil and Lovepreet, too have been booked under the NDPS Act. Legal proceedings are underway against them.
Opium destruction in higher hills
Based on confidential information, a police team from Nihari conducted a successful operation at Bartha village, resulting in the destruction of 1,682 opium plants spread across four fields in higher hills. Efforts are ongoing to identify the perpetrators responsible for cultivating these illegal crops, the police said.
In a separate endeavour, the Sadar Police team recovered 10 missing mobile phones, collectively valued at approximately Rs 1.02 lakh. The recovered devices have been returned to their rightful owners.
