National anti-leprosy day was commemorated at Government Senior Secondary School Sarah in Kangra on January 30 under the National Leprosy Eradication Program.
The event, organized by Dr Sushil Sharma, Chief Medical Officer of the district, aimed to raise awareness about leprosy among students, staff, and the general public.
Dr Tarun Sood, the district program officer, highlighted signs of leprosy, urging individuals with discoloration or changes in skin pigmentation, as well as numbness in hands or feet, to promptly seek medical examination at nearby health centers. Treatment for leprosy, provided free by the government, ensures complete recovery, although it may require a lengthy process.
Emphasizing that leprosy should be treated like any other common illness, health educator Anjali urged people not to stigmatize those affected by the disease. She stressed the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment to prevent disability. As part of the awareness campaign, a poster competition was organized for students, with prizes awarded as tokens of remembrance.
School principal Surindra Kaushal called upon students and staff to actively spread awareness about leprosy, urging a society free from discrimination. Health supervisor Dinesh Kumar and all school faculty were present to support the cause.
