Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has made a significant jump in the global academic rankings, moving up by 200 positions in terms of ranking bands in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.

The institute, which was placed in the 1001–1200 band in the previous edition, has now advanced to the 801–1000 band, marking a notable improvement in its global academic standing and reinforcing IIT Mandi’s growing presence on the international higher-education landscape.

The latest ranking is particularly significant as the THE World University Rankings 2027 covers 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, making it the largest edition of the global rankings so far.

The rankings assess universities across five broad areas—teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook. IIT Mandi’s improved position reflects the institute’s continuing focus on academic quality, research, innovation, industry collaboration and international partnerships.

Commenting on the achievement, IIT Mandi Director Prof. Laxmidhar Behera said the improvement was a reflection of the collective efforts of the institute’s faculty, students, staff, alumni and partner organisations.

He said the institute would continue to focus on transformative education, cutting-edge research and innovations aimed at addressing societal challenges and contributing to a better future.

The director added that the latest achievement would further motivate IIT Mandi to strengthen its academic and research ecosystem and enhance its contribution to India as well as the global community.

With its focus increasingly shifting towards interdisciplinary research, industry-academia collaboration and solutions to regional, national and global challenges, IIT Mandi is seeking to consolidate its position among globally recognised institutions.

The latest ranking provides a significant boost to Himachal Pradesh’s profile in the international higher-education arena and highlights the growing academic and research capabilities emerging from the state.
