The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a significant political victory in the Karsog Assembly constituency on Friday by securing both the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson posts of the Churag Panchayat Samiti, following a dramatic last-minute shift in political allegiance by a Congress-backed member.
In a development that has generated considerable political interest across the region, Veena Kapoor, who was widely perceived to be aligned with the Congress until shortly before the election, joined the BJP ahead of the voting. She was immediately nominated as the BJP-supported candidate for the Chairperson’s post and was elected the same day.
The BJP further strengthened its hold over the Panchayat Samiti after its supported candidate, Roshni Devi, was elected Vice-Chairperson, giving the party complete control of the local body.
A Major Political Upset
The outcome is being viewed as a major political setback for the ruling Congress, which was expected to put up a strong contest in the Churag Panchayat Samiti. Veena Kapoor’s switch on the day of the election altered the political arithmetic and proved decisive in the BJP’s favour.
Political observers described the result as evidence of effective last-minute political management by the BJP. Party leaders are believed to have worked intensively to consolidate support among elected members before the voting, resulting in a decisive outcome.
Local BJP leaders have hailed the victory as a reflection of the party’s organisational strength and coordinated election strategy in the Karsog constituency.
Congress Faces Questions
The unexpected defection has raised questions within the Congress over its internal coordination and political management at the grassroots level. Losing the support of a key member on the day of the election has come as an embarrassment for the party and is likely to trigger introspection within its local unit.
Political analysts believe the development could influence the political narrative ahead of future local body and Panchayati Raj elections in the region.
Focus on Development
After taking oath as Chairperson, Veena Kapoor said her priority would be to ensure equitable development across the Churag Panchayat Samiti, irrespective of political affiliations.
“I will work with all elected members and focus on the overall development of the area,” she said.
Vice-Chairperson Roshni Devi also pledged to prioritise public welfare and accelerate development initiatives aimed at improving basic infrastructure and public services.
The Churag Panchayat Samiti election is being seen as one of the most closely watched grassroots political contests in the Karsog Assembly constituency this year, underscoring the fluid nature of local politics and the importance of strategic alliances in determining electoral outcomes.
