The CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, marked the international Fascination of Plants Day (FoPD) with great zeal, highlighting the vital role of plant science in tackling global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation.

Welcoming the guests, Director Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav underscored the importance of plants in everyday life—from clean air and water to food and fibre. He also outlined the institute’s ongoing work in surveying, documenting, characterising, and conserving plant resources.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. D.K. Upreti, former Acting Director of CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, focused on the intricate relationship between people and plants, with special emphasis on lichens. He explained their significance as indicators of climate change and environmental pollution, urging the audience to adopt sustainable lifestyles and conserve natural resources.

The programme witnessed participation from institute staff, scholars, and dignitaries from nearby organisations. As part of the JIGYASA initiative under the Mission Bioresource Conservation and Prospection, students and teachers from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Paprola, Kangra, also joined the celebrations, making the event a vibrant blend of scientific discourse and community engagement.
