Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, as the Chief Guest, participated in the grand mid-procession (Madhya Jaleb) of the International Shivratri Festival 2026 in Mandi on Wednesday.
The traditional procession was taken out under the ceremonial leadership of the revered presiding deity Shri Raj Madho Rai, drawing large crowds and reflecting the festival’s deep spiritual and cultural significance.
The Speaker offered prayers at the Shri Raj Madho Rai Temple, seeking peace, prosperity, and well-being for the people of the state.
The town witnessed an atmosphere filled with devotion and celebration as traditional instruments, religious customs, and the presence of hundreds of devotees added grandeur to one of Himachal Pradesh’s most iconic cultural festivals.
Festivals Represent Himachal’s Living Heritage
Addressing a gathering at the Paddal fair ground, Pathania said fairs and festivals are an inseparable part of Himachal’s cultural identity.
He referred to major state celebrations such as Mandi Shivratri, Kullu Dussehra, Chamba Minjar, and Rampur Lavi Fair, stating that these events highlight the unique traditions of divine faith and community participation that have continued for generations.
Calling his visit to the Shivratri Festival a memorable experience, the Speaker praised the enthusiasm of the younger generation in safeguarding folk traditions and religious practices that form the backbone of Himachal’s heritage.
Culture is the Foundation of Progress
The Speaker emphasised that no society or nation can progress without protecting its cultural roots.
He noted that despite the state facing financial constraints, Himachal Pradesh continues to maintain strong development standards, particularly in rural areas. Highlighting progress in education, he said the state has achieved benchmarks comparable to leading regions such as Kerala.
He added that the people of Himachal, especially the present generation, remain highly aware of their rights, traditions, and heritage, and would not allow any weakening of the state’s cultural strength.
Commemorative Postal Cover Released for Mandi’s 500th Foundation Year
On the occasion, Pathania unveiled a special commemorative postal cover prepared by the Indian Postal Department in collaboration with the festival organising committee, marking Mandi’s entry into its 500th foundation year.
He also recalled the historical connection between Mandi and Chamba, noting that while Mandi has completed five centuries of foundation, Chamba continues to preserve over a thousand years of cultural legacy.
After the programme, the Speaker visited exhibitions set up at the festival venue, describing them as an effective platform for spreading awareness about welfare schemes among the public.
Cultural Performances Add Colour to Festival
The event featured vibrant performances by cultural troupes from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Punjab, sponsored by the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, adding further richness to the celebrations.
Several public representatives, senior officials, members of religious bodies, councillors, and departmental officers were present on the occasion.
