The Tulip Garden developed by the CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, was opened to the public on Tuesday, offering visitors a vibrant display of colours and a glimpse into scientific floriculture under Himalayan conditions.
The garden was formally inaugurated by Dr OP Yadav, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Palampur, at the CSIR-IHBT premises. This year, the institute has planted 50,000 tulip bulbs across six vibrant varieties, highlighting its expertise in the cultivation of bulbous ornamental crops suited to the Himalayan region.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director, CSIR-IHBT, said that the Tulip Garden stands as a model of science-led floriculture, where research, advanced technology, farmer participation, and public outreach come together to promote ornamental horticulture in the country. He emphasized that such initiatives not only strengthen scientific innovation but also help create awareness about sustainable floriculture practices.
The Tulip Garden is expected to attract a large number of visitors from within Himachal Pradesh and other parts of the country, thereby boosting scientific tourism in the region. Notably, more than one lakh visitors from across India visited the garden last year, reflecting its growing popularity among nature lovers, tourists, and students.
In addition to public engagement, CSIR-IHBT continues to contribute to national landscaping initiatives. The institute has supplied 22,000 tulip bulbs to the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) for public landscape displays, underlining strong institutional collaboration and the increasing national demand for high-quality, indigenous planting material. Furthermore, 3,000 tulip bulbs have been supplied to the Himachal Pradesh State Forest Department for the development of a tulip garden at Saurab Van Vihar, Palampur.
With its blend of science, beauty, and public participation, the CSIR-IHBT Tulip Garden continues to emerge as a significant attraction and a benchmark for ornamental horticulture in India.
