Crucial even in panic attacks, similar emergencies where every second counts

Sundernagar-based Jawaharlal Nehru Government Engineering College (JNGEC) in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh has added a new feather to its cap with textile engineering trainees developing an innovative smart-fabric jacket capable of issuing alerts during a heart attack or other medical emergencies.
The jacket, created using sensor-enabled fabric, integrates smart technology directly into the textile. Developed under the advanced platform Nexus Weave Smart, the project blends healthcare and safety applications, with the prototype designed keeping humanitarian needs at its core.

The system can prove crucial in situations such as heart attacks, panic attacks and similar emergencies where every second counts. It offers real-time heart rate monitoring, live location tracking and instant SOS alerts to pre-selected contacts.
In critical conditions, the jacket automatically sends alerts along with the user’s real-time location, supported by secure and authenticated data management.
The prototype has been developed by textile engineering trainees Adarsh Dhiman, Pritansh Goswami, Vikars, Aastha and Khushboo, under the mentorship of Dr Priya Jaswal.
College director and principal Prof Rajiv Khanduja, along with head of the textile engineering department Praveen Kumar, lauded the initiative, describing it as a project with the potential to evolve into a nationwide health and emergency response system.
“The jacket provides real-time heart rate data and, through an SOS module, sends emergency messages with live location to the user’s chosen contacts. With an integrated digital data system, the platform significantly reduces response time, which is critical in life-threatening situations,” said Dr Jaswal.
