Shimla: In a major step towards promoting renewable energy and strengthening infrastructure in remote regions, the Indian Army is planning to establish wind turbine projects at 20 locations along Himachal Pradesh’s border areas.

The initiative aims to generate clean electricity for local communities and military installations, significantly improving living conditions and connectivity in the high-altitude zones.

The move was discussed during a meeting between Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and senior officials of the Army’s Central Command on Tuesday (November 11, 2025). The Chief Minister assured full cooperation from the state government for the smooth execution of the project.

20 Wind Turbines to generate up to 80,000 kW of power annually

According to details shared by the Army, a detailed project report (DPR) for the wind turbine installations has already been prepared. Once operational, the project is expected to generate 68,000 to 80,000 kilowatts of electricity annually, enough to power around 120 to 160 households in remote border villages.

Officials said the initiative will not only ensure a steady power supply for local residents but also help the Army maintain operational efficiency in harsh climatic conditions where grid connectivity is limited. The use of renewable energy is also expected to reduce reliance on diesel generators and cut carbon emissions.

CM Sukhu hailed the project as a transformative step for border communities, saying it would bring sustainable development and new opportunities for residents of these hard-to-reach areas.

Tourism and border development on the rise

The Chief Minister also expressed satisfaction with the ongoing border tourism initiative, launched jointly by the state government and the Army. The programme has led to a surge in tourist inflow — from 21,000 visitors in 2024 to over 70,000 in 2025 — boosting the local economy and creating livelihood opportunities.

Sukhu directed officials to further improve facilities for tourists and to develop supporting infrastructure such as roads, rest houses and emergency services in the border regions.

Efforts to strengthen border trade and connectivity

Highlighting the state’s push to improve connectivity, Sukhu said the government has sought approval from the Centre to reopen trade routes through the Shipki La Pass, which could revive traditional border trade with China. Positive indications have already been received, he noted, adding that discussions are also underway to resume trade through Lipulekh and Nathu La passes.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the progress of the proposed Rangrik airport, urging the Army to accelerate work on the project. Once completed, the airport is expected to further enhance tourism, accessibility and economic growth in Himachal’s border belts.
