Sri Renukaji MLA Vinay Kumar unanimously elected Himachal Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker

Among three proposals was one presented by leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur

DHARAMSHALA: In a significant development, 44-year-old Congress MLA Vinay Kumar, representing Sri Renukaji constituency in Sirmaur district, was unanimously elected the Deputy Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha during the winter session of the Assembly at Tapovan in Dharamshala on Tuesday (December 19, 2023).

The Newz Radar was the first to report in the morning that Vinay Kumar was the likely choice for the post, which had been lying vacant for the past over a year.

Three proposals were received in the Vidhan Sabha in favour of Vinay Kumar’s candidature. The first proposal was put forth by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu himself, which was supported by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri. The second proposal was brought by Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar and backed by Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil.

Former Chief Minister and BJP MLA Jai Ram Thakur, who is the leader of opposition in the Assembly, also moved a motion in Vinay Kumar’s favour, which was supported by BJP MLA Hans Raj.

Subsequently, CM Sukhu, Jai Ram Thakur, minister Harshvardhan Chauhan and Hans Raj installed Vinay Kumar on the seat of the Deputy Speaker. After his installation ceremony, Vinay Kumar said, “I am happy the area where I have been elected from is also the area of Himachal first CM Dr YS Parmar. I am honoured to enter the Assembly third time. Before me, my father won the seat six times. I assure you that I will live up to your expectations.”

Vinay Kumar, son of late Prem Singh, former Chief Parliamentary Secretary, was born on March 12, 1978, at Maina Bagh in Sirmaur. He is married to Seema Bhushan and the couple has a son and a daughter.

His political journey includes serving as the general secretary of the Block Congress Committee in Sri Renukaji and holding the position of a non-official Director at HP Agricultural Rural Development Bank Ltd. He has been the working president of the HPCC since June 2022.

Vinay Kumar was elected to the Assembly in December 2012 and re-elected in December 2017 and December 2022. He served as the Chief Parliamentary Secretary from December 25, 2012, to December 20, 2017. In the 2018-2022 term, he served as a member of the Welfare, Library, Research & Reference, and Human Development Committees.

Beyond politics, Vinay Kumar has a keen interest in social service. His favourite pastimes include reading, travelling, sports and music. He has travelled to various countries, including UAE, Hong Kong, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Macau.
