From the remote mountains of Himachal to the high-altitude tracks of Ladakh, Prem Singh and Bimla Devi are proving that passion and discipline can conquer age.

In the quiet village of Junda in Lahaul-Spiti, surrounded by snow-clad peaks and long winters, the couple — in their late fifties and early sixties — are redefining fitness and determination.

Prem Singh Vasu (61), a retired bank officer, and his wife Bimla Devi Vasu (57), a homemaker, have become role models for runners across India. Over the past few years, they’ve completed more than 50 marathons held in different corners of the country — from Himalayan trails to the plains of Rishikesh.

Their journey began with a simple wish to stay fit. Today, it stands as a shining example of how discipline, routine and a positive mindset can turn ordinary lives into extraordinary stories.

Rishikesh Ultra: Where they outran age

At the Rishikesh Ultra Marathon on November 9, 2025, organised by the Vivekanand Youth Connect Foundation, Prem Singh stunned participants by finishing second in the 50-km category, a remarkable feat for a 61-year-old. His focus, stamina and calm pace impressed even seasoned runners.

His wife Bimla Devi matched his grit, finishing first in the 10-km women’s run, sending a strong message that fitness has no age limit. Both have now become a symbol of motivation for people who often use age or routine as excuses to skip exercise.

Conquering Cold and Altitude at the Manali Marathon

Earlier this year, the couple participated in the Himalayan Extreme Trail – Manali Marathon 2025, known for its steep climbs and biting cold.

Prem Singh completed the 21-km half marathon in 2 hours 22 minutes, securing first place in his age group. His wife clocked 42 minutes in the 5 km category, also taking the top spot.

Running through icy winds and narrow trails, the couple proved that determination can overcome any terrain.

Testing limits in Ladakh’s thin air

The Ladakh Marathon, held on September 14, 2025, is among the world’s toughest races — not just for its distance, but for its altitude of 11,115 feet above sea level. The thin air and blazing sun make it a true test of endurance.

Yet, Prem Singh completed the 42.29-km full marathon in 5 hours 20 minutes, finishing strong and earning praise from fellow athletes. His performance at such altitude stands as a story of grit and consistency.

For Prem Singh and Bimla Devi, marathons aren’t about medals but mindset. The couple now encourages others, especially senior citizens, to stay active and treat fitness as a lifelong habit.
Their message is simple: “Make fitness part of your life. Believe in yourself. Age should never be an excuse.”

Their achievements have inspired many in Lahaul and nearby regions to take up running, walking and other forms of exercise. They aren’t just marathoners but torchbearers of health and self-belief.
“You can achieve whatever your mind believes. Stay strong, every step brings you closer to your dream. You are the architect of your destiny,” says Prem Singh.

From the remote valleys of Lahaul to the marathon tracks of Rishikesh and Ladakh, Prem Singh and Bimla Devi Vasu have shown that passion never retires. Their story is not just about running but living with purpose, energy and an unbreakable spirit.
