Himachal Pradesh Health Minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil (Retd.) has deferred his upcoming 10-day official overseas visit to London and France, following strong criticism from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The trip, scheduled for October 2, was intended for a delegation to study advanced healthcare systems.

However, it faced backlash due to ongoing monsoon-related disasters in the state.

Opposition leader Jairam Thakur highlighted the suffering of citizens, disruptions in essential services, and halted cancer treatments under the Him Care scheme, accusing the minister of prioritizing personal gain during the crisis.

The controversy intensified as the minister’s son, Colonel Sanjay Shandil (Retd.), was part of the delegation.

The minister defended his inclusion, citing age-related support needs and personal commitment to cover his son’s travel expenses.

He also noted that other officials and their family members were included in the delegation.

The minister emphasized that the visit is merely postponed and could occur within six months when conditions stabilize.

The delegation comprises several state health officials and MLAs, including Health Secretary M Sudha Devi and National Health Mission officials.

In a related development, the Himachal Pradesh government is taking steps to enhance healthcare infrastructure in the state.

The government has approved the purchase of five Phaco machines worth approximately ₹30 lakh for cataract surgeries at Chamba Medical College and selected hospitals.

Additionally, amendments have been made to expedite the procurement process for digital radiography machines, high-resolution colour Doppler ultrasound, and digital mammography machines for Government Medical College, Chamba.

These initiatives aim to improve healthcare services and reduce reliance on private providers, ensuring better access to medical facilities for the residents of Himachal Pradesh.
