Chamba: A tragic incident occurred at the historic Chamba Chaugan in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday (September 24, 2025) evening when senior Ramleela artiste Amresh Mahajan, popularly known as Shibu, passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest while performing on stage. He was 70.
The incident took place around 8.30 pm during the staging of King Dashrath’s court.
Amresh was enacting the role of King Dashrath when he suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed. Fellow actors rushed to his aid and quickly shifted him to Chamba Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Was prominent part of the Chamba Ramlila for nearly 23 years
Amresh Mahajan had been a prominent part of the Chamba Ramlila for nearly 23 years, performing key roles such as Dashrath and Ravana. His consistent presence on stage had made him a familiar and respected figure among audience, keeping alive the cultural and religious tradition year after year.
Shock among Ramlila fraternity
His sudden death left both the Ramlila troupe and spectators in deep shock. Swapan Mahajan, president of the Chamba Ramlila Club, confirmed that Amresh collapsed mid-performance and could not be revived despite immediate efforts. The club members and local residents expressed grief, remembering him as a dedicated artist whose passion enriched the historic Ramlila of Chamba.
