Hamirpur: Despite the district administration declaring a holiday in all government and private schools due to a warning of heavy rainfall, the students of a few schools of Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh were reportedly called to attend events.
The incident came to light from the Government Primary School in Lozahar where the head teacher, who is to retire on August 30 (2025), allegedly organised a farewell party a few days in advance on August 25. The matter created a controversy when it was found that children were asked to attend the school despite clear orders from the district administration that only teachers and staff should be present.
The head teacher’s retirement coincided with a holiday and the farewell function was conducted within the school premises. Reports suggest that even students from an adjoining government senior secondary school were asked to join the event.
Deputy Director (Elementary Education) Kamal Kishore confirmed that the incident was under investigation. “Despite adverse weather conditions, children were called to school for a farewell function. This is a violation of the district administration’s order. A report is being prepared,” he said.
District Education Officer Mohi Ram stated that a written clarification had been sought from the school head. “If the matter pertains to the primary school, the responsibility lies with the head teacher there. However, if students from the senior secondary school were also involved, then the principal will also be held accountable. Action will be taken accordingly,” he said.
The school principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Lozahar, however, defended the move, saying: “The farewell had been scheduled earlier. The school management had approved it and after the function, the children were offered food. If they came to eat, what crime was committed?”
The issue has sparked debate among parents and the local community over safety lapses, given the continuous heavy rain in the region. The authorities have assured strict action against those found guilty of disregarding safety protocols.
