Bilaspur: A 68-year-old woman from Tihra Malyawar village in the Ghumarwin police station area of Bilaspur district in Himachal Pradesh *died under suspicious circumstances on Thursday (June 26, 2025), sparking outrage among her family members who have alleged that the *death was a result of a long-standing land dispute with their neighbours.
The deceased, identified as Roshni Devi, reportedly got into a heated argument with neighbouring families around 1.30 pm on Thursday over a boundary wall, access road and land encroachment. According to her son Sukh Dev and daughter-in-law, the situation escalated when a JCB (excavator) being used at the site allegedly pushed Roshni Devi with its bucket, causing her to fall and become trapped under the soil.
The family alleged that as they attempted to rush Roshni Devi to a hospital in Ghumarwin, the neighbours blocked the pathway to their home, delaying medical attention. She died en route due to the delay, they alleged.
Following the incident, the grieving family staged a protest by blocking the nearby four-lane highway, demanding justice and accusing the neighbours of murder. The road blockade caused disruption until the police intervened and convinced the family to clear the route.
Bilaspur DSP Madan Dhiman, speaking to the media, confirmed that a case had been registered and an investigation was underway. “Initial evidence suggests the death may have resulted from an ongoing dispute over land and access routes. We are recording statements of all involved parties and a post-mortem of the deceased is being conducted,” he said.
The family has alleged that the same neighbours have repeatedly damaged their property, including the pathway, gate and trees. They also alleged that when Roshni Devi was allegedly assaulted, local panchayat officials were present at the site but failed to intervene.
Officials from the revenue department had previously demarcated the boundary in question, but tensions remained unresolved, leading to Thursday’s confrontation. The police have assured that all angles, including the alleged assault and obstruction of emergency medical care, were being investigated.
