Chamba: Pangi valley in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh witnessed the grand conclusion of the historic Mindhal Mata Yatra, which began on May 29 and culminated on Saturday (June 14, 2025) with the ceremonial departure of the “Badi Chhadi” (sacred staff).

This year, 20,271 devotees reached the revered shrine of Mindhal Vasini Mata in 2,220 vehicles, marking a significant rise in participation compared to previous years.
What started in 1998 with a single vehicle has now evolved into a major pilgrimage, placing the remote Pangi Valley prominently on the religious tourism map of Himachal Pradesh.

The yatra has not only enhanced the spiritual identity of the region but also positively impacted the local economy. Pilgrims are now showing growing interest in other parts of the valley as well, providing a boost to the broader tourism sector.

Infrastructure struggles despite spiritual success

Despite the spiritual and economic success of the yatra, several logistical shortcomings have become increasingly evident. The most pressing concern is the lack of proper accommodation in Mindhal village, where there is only one guest house to serve the growing number of pilgrims. This results in considerable discomfort for visitors.

Although the state government had earlier identified land in Khabal for the construction of traveler facilities, no development work has commenced to date. Additionally, the increasing number of vehicles has created a parking crisis, hindering the movement of local transport and affecting daily life in nearby areas.

Safety concerns over use of gas cylinders

Another serious concern during the yatra was the unregulated use of domestic LPG cylinders in community kitchens (langars) set up along the route. Despite the evident fire and safety risks, no stringent action was taken by the authorities, raising questions about the preparedness and oversight of the administration.

The Mindhal Mata Yatra remains a spiritually enriching and economically beneficial event for Pangi Valley. However, for its sustainable growth and safety, immediate steps must be taken by the administration.

Key focus areas should include adequate lodging facilities, improving parking infrastructure and strict regulation of LPG cylinder usage during the yatra. By addressing these challenges promptly, the government can ensure that the yatra continues to flourish as a safe and well-organised religious tradition for years to come.
