MANDI (Munish Sood)
The Namdhari community in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi celebrated the 209th Prakash Parv (birth anniversary) of Satguru Ram Singh, the revered freedom fighter and spiritual leader, with great enthusiasm on Saturday (February 1, 2025).
The festival, coinciding with the Basant Panchami, has been celebrated in the city for several years with the active participation of local residents.
In the past two days, the Namdhari gurdwara in Mandi has been the venue for various spiritual and cultural events. Along with kirtans and religious discourses, a series of competitions have been held, reflecting the community’s deep devotion and joy.
Exhibition titled Namdhari Heritage set up at historic Seri Stage
The highlight of today’s celebration was the inauguration of the exhibition titled “Namdhari Heritage”, set up at the historic Seri Stage.
The exhibition showcased the Namdhari community’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle and social reforms through vivid photographs and video films, bringing to light the invaluable role of the Namdhari Sikhs in shaping the history of India’s independence.
The exhibition was formally inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan and Mandi Mayor Virendra Bhatt, who lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the beginning of the event.
The occasion was further enriched by speeches and poems, delivered by children and other community members, highlighting the significant history and values of the Namdhari movement.
Legacy of Kuka Namdhari Sikhs in freedom struggle
While the vibrant celebrations in Mandi marked the 209th birth anniversary of Satguru Ram Singh, it is essential to remember the historical significance of the Kuka Namdhari Sikhs in India’s freedom movement.
The Kuka movement, initiated by Satguru Ram Singh in the 19th century, was not just a religious reform, but also a bold challenge against British colonial rule.
Satguru Ram Singh’s leadership sparked a revolution, where the Kuka Sikhs, through their commitment to social justice and equality, directly confronted the British empire. The movement, known for its advocacy of moral living and the rejection of foreign authority, played a key role in inspiring a spirit of resistance long before many other revolutionary movements in India took shape.
The Kukas were known for their unwavering resistance to British policies and for their campaigns against social evils like caste discrimination, untouchability, and the oppression of women.
Satguru Ram Singh’s call for Khalsa unity and self-rule resonated deeply among his followers, who were determined to reclaim their rights and dignity.
One of the movement’s most iconic moments came during the Jaito Sahib struggle, where the Kukas defiantly refused to comply with British orders, even under brutal repression. Many Kuka Sikhs were imprisoned, exiled, and executed for their participation, but their sacrifices laid the foundation for India’s fight for freedom. Their resilience and courage remain an inspiration to all freedom-loving people.
Acknowledging contributions of Namdhari community
