CM Sukhu asks bird lovers to intensify conservation efforts

Kangra: The Pong Dam in Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a remarkable rise in the number of migratory birds this season, with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasising the need for enhanced safety and tourism initiatives during his visit to the site today.
While touring Pong Dam and the ancient temples of Bathu-Ki-Lari in Kangra district, the Chief Minister highlighted the area’s potential as a premier tourist destination. “The arrival of migratory birds from Siberia and Mongolia adds to the region’s charm, drawing visitors from across the country,” he said.

92,885 migratory birds already recorded

The Chief Minister revealed that, as of December 2024, 92,885 migratory birds have been recorded at Pong Dam, with the number expected to surpass 100,000 by the end of the season. This marks a significant increase from last year’s total of 85,000 birds.
On average, 100 species visit the dam annually, and 85 species have already been observed this season.

Government’s conservation, tourism efforts

To ensure the safety of these birds, the Chief Minister directed the Forest Department to strengthen conservation measures. He also announced initiatives to improve the tourist experience, including deployment of two additional speedboats, complementing the two already in operation; development of basic facilities for tourists and introduction of water sports at the Regional Water Centre near the Pong Dam Barrage to attract more visitors.
Last year, nearly 30,000 tourists visited the region and efforts are underway to further boost footfall.

Wildlife Interpretation Centre in Basa

A Wildlife Interpretation Centre has been established in Basa, Jawali constituency, at a cost of Rs 3.20 crore. The centre aims to educate visitors about conservation and migratory bird patterns.
Facilities include dormitories to accommodate students, providing them with opportunities to connect with nature and learn about biodiversity.

Call to bird enthusiasts

Inviting bird enthusiasts, nature lovers and students to Pong Dam, the Chief Minister said, “This area offers a unique opportunity to witness the beauty of avian migration and learn about conservation efforts. We are committed to preserving this ecological treasure while promoting sustainable tourism.”
The CM was accompanied by Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Chander Kumar, Ayush Minister Yadvinder Goma, Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa and other officials during the visit.
