Shimla, December 24 –
Himachal Pradesh witnessed significant snowfall for the second consecutive day, disrupting daily life across the state. Popular destinations like Kufri, Narkanda, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur were blanketed in snow, drawing tourists while creating challenges for residents. Traffic came to a standstill on 174 roads, including three national highways, and over 683 transformers were knocked out, plunging several areas into darkness.
Roads Blocked, Travel Advisory Issued
The State Emergency Operation Center reported severe traffic disruptions, with Shimla being the worst hit. Upper Shimla faced blockages on 89 roads, while Kinnaur (44 roads), Mandi (25), Kangra (6), Kullu (4), Lahaul-Spiti (2), and Chamba (1) also saw closures. National highways in Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti were rendered inaccessible due to heavy snow.
Key routes, such as Theog-Chopal, Theog-Rohru, Theog-Rampur, and Shimla-Kufri-Theog roads, were deemed hazardous due to icy conditions. Shimla Police advised travelers to avoid these routes and use emergency numbers in critical situations.
Power Outages Across the State
Snowfall caused widespread power disruptions, with 683 transformers out of service. Sirmaur was the most affected, reporting 456 non-functional transformers, followed by Lahaul-Spiti (139), Mandi (54), and Kinnaur (27). Authorities are working to restore power but face delays due to harsh weather.
Tourist Delight, Local Challenges
While tourists flocked to Shimla, Manali, and Kufri to enjoy the scenic snow-covered landscapes, locals struggled with blocked roads and power outages. The early snowfall has boosted tourism but has also highlighted the challenges of life in the hills during winter.
Freezing Temperatures and Weather Forecast
The Meteorological Department reported subzero temperatures in seven locations, with Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti recording -6.9°C. Snowfall totals included Khadarala (24 cm) and Sangla (16.5 cm). While clear weather is expected on December 25-26, a fresh Western Disturbance could bring more snow from December 27-30.
Efforts to clear roads and restore services are ongoing as Himachal Pradesh braces for more winter weather.
