Newlywed Hamirpur taxi driver killed in collision with SUV driven by ‘drunk’ youth
A road accident near the Himachal-Punjab border has taken the lives of a 30-year-old taxi driver, Yuvraj Rana, and a female passenger while injuring four others, including a small child.
The incident occurred due to the alleged reckless behaviour of an SUV driver who, as per witnesses, was under the influence of alcohol.
After the collision, the SUV driver and occupants fled the scene. Even hours later, local authorities and ambulance services had not arrived at the accident site.
The accident took place near Kiratpur Sahib on the busy Chandigarh-Manali National Highway.
Yuvraj was driving a Swift Dzire taxi en route from Hamirpur to Chandigarh when an SUV, allegedly coming from Delhi, crashed into the taxi head-on while driving in the wrong lane. Eyewitnesses said the SUV’s occupants — a woman and two men — appeared intoxicated.
Despite the severity of the accident, no ambulances arrived on time, and even passing vehicles did not stop to assist.
Hours later, authorities finally arrived, and the injured were transferred to PGI-Chandigarh. Police are actively investigating the delay and seeking the individuals responsible.
Yuvraj Rana, the taxi driver, had married just four months ago and his wife is reportedly expecting their first child. Devastated family members, including his wife and sister, rushed to the scene following the accident.
Another passenger, Deepika Sharma, also lost her life in the crash. Those injured include Ena Bharti, who hired the taxi to reach Chandigarh for her coaching classes, along with Reena Devi, a child and another individual.
