MANDI: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu seems to be going filmy, at least that appears from the title of a latest government programme called ‘Chief Minister: An Evening with the Village Family’.
The title has its resemblance in a classic Bollywood blockbuster, “An Evening in Paris”. Much like the film, known for its glamorous international settings and spontaneous romance, the CM’s programme aims to foster an unfiltered connection between the government and its people by creating a surprise element as Sukhu and senior officials will visit villages without prior notice.
The unique programme is designed to strengthen governance and closely monitor the implementation of state-run schemes and development projects. By interacting directly with villagers in their homes, the initiative ensures that the voices of the rural population are heard without the typical layers of bureaucracy and pre-planned fanfare.

The 1967 film “An Evening in Paris” was a superhit directed by Shakti Samanta, starring Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore, with music by the iconic duo Shankar-Jaikishan.
Among first films to be shot abroad
Known for its extravagant locations in Paris and Switzerland, it became one of the first Indian films to be shot abroad, setting trends for glamour in Bollywood.
The movie remains etched in cinema history for its evergreen music and lavish cinematography, with a storyline revolving around love, mistaken identities and thrilling twists. Much like the film’s captivating unpredictability, CM Sukhu’s initiative seeks to introduce an element of spontaneity to improve the effectiveness of governance in Himachal’s villages.
Direct interaction to gauge scheme impact
Through this initiative, CM Sukhu’s convoy will make unannounced visits to rural areas across the state. The hallmark of this programme is its surprise element — villagers will not be informed beforehand of the CM’s arrival. The Chief Minister will interact with the local residents, gather their feedback on the benefits and shortcomings of ongoing development projects and assess the reach and efficiency of public welfare schemes.

The Chief Minister emphasised that this initiative is part of his government’s broader vision to bring systemic reforms that empower Himachal’s villages. “Through ‘Chief Minister: An Evening with the Village Family’, we aim to understand the real impact of our schemes directly from the people and ensure that no village is left behind in the state’s development journey,” Sukhu stated. He said rural and remote areas would receive special attention under this initiative.
Roadmap for progress and accountability
The government is currently drafting a detailed roadmap for the programme. Chief Minister Sukhu will spend an entire evening and night with the villagers during each visit, ensuring that sufficient time is dedicated to addressing local concerns and reviewing the status of infrastructure and services in the area. Officials and department staff responsible for various projects will be evaluated based on the feedback provided by the residents.
This grassroots initiative follows the successful public interactions that CM Sukhu conducted earlier in his tenure in the remote regions of Lahaul-Spiti, where he spent two days and nights in Kaza, addressing local grievances and announcing critical development projects for the Spiti Valley, including improved water supply, road infrastructure and electricity. It was during this tour that he fulfilled a key election promise of providing Rs 1,500 per month to women in the region.
