MANDI: The Mandi city is on the verge of a significant transformation as the much-anticipated Mandi bypass, part of the Kiratpur-Manali four-lane project, is set to open for traffic by the end of this month.
With 90% of the work on the bypass already completed, the project is expected to alleviate the city’s persistent traffic woes, especially for travellers heading towards Kullu-Manali and Chandigarh.
Mandi bypass road almost ready
According to officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the remaining tasks include finalising the approach roads to the bridge over Suketi khud near Chakkar. The bridge structure is complete and the approach roads are expected to be finished within next 10 days.
4 tunnels along route
In addition to the bridge, four tunnels along the bypass route have also been completed, with only minor cosmetic work such as painting underway.
The road surfacing from Bagla to Vindravani has also been completed. NHAI Project Director Varun Chari confirmed that the bypass would be operational by the end of this month, despite minor delays caused by the monsoon season.

Long-awaited solution to traffic snarls
The opening of the Mandi Bypass is expected to bring much-needed relief to Mandi city, which has been grappling with severe traffic congestion for years. Currently, all traffic between Kullu-Manali and Chandigarh must pass through the city, causing frequent jams and long delays, especially during peak tourist season.
Once the bypass is operational, all traffic will be diverted from Bagla to Vindravani, bypassing the city entirely. This diversion will significantly reduce the number of vehicles on Mandi’s internal roads, easing the pressure on the city’s infrastructure and providing residents and commuters with smoother, quicker travel experiences.

The bypass is expected to provide multiple benefits for both travellers and local residents. Commuters heading towards Kullu-Manali or Chandigarh will enjoy shorter travel time and a smoother, more direct route, bypassing the crowded city streets. This will not only save time but also reduce fuel consumption, leading to cost savings for drivers.
Local residents, meanwhile, will benefit from the reduction in air and noise pollution as fewer vehicles will pass through the city. The removal of heavy traffic from the city will also improve the quality of life for Mandi residents, making the city streets safer and more pedestrian-friendly.
