Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur is leading by 636 votes after the fifth round of counting of votes in the Dehra Assembly byelection.
Kamlesh is pitted against BJP candidate Hoshyar Singh, a two-term former Independent legislator whose resignation from the Vidhan Sabha had necessitated the bypoll.
While Kamlesh Thakur has 13,300 votes after the fifth round, Hoshyar Singh has 12,664 votes. CM Sukhu’s wife trailed in the first four rounds. She trailed by 261 votes after the first round, 360 votes after the second round, 557 after the third, a lead that squeezed down to 37 votes after the counting for the fourth round ended. She took a lead of 636 votes after the fifth round.
The CM’s wife is locked in a battle of prestige against Hoshyar Singh in her maiden election, the result likely to be seen as a referendum on the performance of the 18-month-old Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government.
Kamlesh belongs to Dehra constituency in Kangra district and is married in neighbouring Nadaun, the seat represented in the Assembly by the first-term Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu.
All eyes are on the crucial Assembly bypoll in Dehra, one of the three seats alongside Hamirpur and Nalagarh where bypoll were conducted on July 10 (2024).
Meanwhile, Congress candidates Dr Pushpinder Verma and Hardeep Bawa have been leading in Hamirpur and Nalagarh against BJP’s Ashish Sharma and KL Thakur, respectively.
