Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur has been trailing by 557 votes in the Assembly byelection in Dehra constituency, the counting of which is underway.
Kamlesh is pitted against BJP candidate Hoshyar Singh, a two-term former legislator whose resignation from the Vidhan Sabha had necessitated the bypoll.
While Hoshyar Singh got 7884 votes after round 3, Kamlesh had 7287, a difference of 557 votes. The vote difference was of 360 votes after second round and 261 votes after the first round.
Kamlesh Thakur is locked in a battle of prestige against Hoshyar Singh in her maiden election, the result likely to be seen as a referendum on the performance of the 18-month-old Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government.
Kamlesh belongs to Dehra constituency in Kangra district and is married in neighbouring Nadaun, the seats represented in the Assembly by first-term Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu.
All eyes are on the crucial Assembly bypoll in Dehra, one of the three seats — Hamirpur and Nalagarh the other two — where bypoll were conducted on July 10 (2024). Meanwhile, Congress candidate Dr Pushpinder Verma has been leading by 200 votes in Hamirpur. He is pitted against BJP’s Ashish Sharma.
